Booking a first appointment with a new dentist comes with questions: How long will it take? Will I need a lot of work? Will they judge me if it’s been years?
This guide walks through exactly what happens at your first visit to Full Heart Dentistry — from the moment you call to schedule through checkout — so you know what you’re walking into.
Your First Visit at a Glance
- Duration: 60–90 minutes
- What’s included: Health history review, comprehensive exam, digital X-rays, and a cleaning in most cases
- Languages spoken: English and Spanish. Just ask for a Spanish-speaking appointment when you book
- Cost: Varies findings; our team reviews everything with you before any treatment
- What to bring: Photo ID and your insurance card (if you have one)
What Happens Before Your Appointment?
When you call to schedule, our front desk team will help you find a time that works and let you know what to bring, usually just your insurance information and a form of ID. If you’re a new patient, plan to arrive 15-minute early to fill out new patient paperwork.
You don’t need to explain how long it’s been since your last dentist visit. Some of our patients last saw a dentist a few months ago. Some haven’t been in a decade. Some have never been. None of that changes how we treat you when you walk through the door. We’re just glad you’re here.
What Is the Check-In Experience Like?
When you arrive, we’ll welcome you in the front office and bring you back to the appointment room when we’re ready. Before the exam starts, we’ll ask about your health history and what brought you in — whether that’s a tooth that’s been bothering you, a goal like whitening, or a routine cleaning.
This early conversation shapes the rest of the visit. If anything makes you nervous, tell us. We can slow down, explain each step, or stop and schedule the cleaning portion for another day.
What Happens During the Exam?
A comprehensive new patient exam evaluates:
- Your teeth and any existing dental work
- Gum and periodontal health
- Bite and jaw function
- Areas of wear, sensitivity, or abnormalities
We’ll also take digital X-rays. They’re fast, low-radiation, and give us a clear picture of what’s happening below the surface of your teeth.
We use an AI-powered diagnostic tool called Pearl Vision that flags areas worth a closer look on your X-rays. It doesn’t replace clinical judgment, Dr. Smith reviews every image, but it gives us a second set of eyes and makes it easier to show you exactly what we’re seeing.
In most cases, your exam is followed by a cleaning the same day, when our evaluation shows your gums are healthy and free of gum disease. We customize your care based on that exam. If signs of gum disease are present, we’ll schedule a cleaning tailored to your needs. And if you’d rather come back another day for your cleaning, that’s fine too.
What If I Need Treatment?
If we find something that needs attention, we’ll walk you through the findings, explain your options, review your insurance benefits before scheduling anything. You’ll leave with a clear understanding of what’s recommended, why, and what it will cost. We won’t pressure you into care you don’t need.

Most treatments can be handled in our office, often in fewer visits than you’d expect:
- Early signs of decay may be treatable with Curodont, a drill-free option that strengthens enamel without filling material.
- If you need a crown, we offer same-day crowns so you can be done in one appointment instead of two or three.
- If we find signs of gum disease, we’re one of the few practices in Rochester offering LANAP, a less invasive laser treatment with no cutting or stitches.
You’ll leave with a clear understanding of what’s recommended, why, and what it costs. We won’t pressure you into care you don’t need.
What If You Have Dental Anxiety?
Dental anxiety is very common. It’s the main reason people avoid coming to the dentist, but it’s something we help our patients manage every day in our office.
Some patients had a bad experience years ago. Some feel embarrassed about the condition of their teeth. Others are worried about the costs associated with the care they need. If those concerns sound familiar, you are in good company.
Our approach is simple: we listen first, we explain what’s happening before we do it, and we work at the pace you’re comfortable with. We won’t lecture you about missed appointments or make assumptions about your habits. Dental visits might never become your favorite errand, but they shouldn’t make you dread picking up the phone to schedule one.
Going to the dentist might never be your favorite activity, but being treated with kindness, patience, and respect can make it a lot more pleasant.
